Is Battlefield 3 a sequel to Battlefield Bad Company 2?

The reason I ask is because BC2 came out a little while ago and Battlefield 2 is around 5 years old. I just don't understand why DICE would just drop the Bad Company franchise and decide to continue an older one.Is Battlefield 3 a sequel to Battlefield Bad Company 2?
If it was a sequel to Bad Company 2, I'm sure the title would include the Bad Company part.



Don't worry, it doesn't mean DICE dropped the franchise. Remember when Call of Duty: World at War came out first instead of the second Modern Warfare game? It's kind of like this situation. I think MoH is sorta an extension of Bad Company 2, even though it's a different story line. If you're looking for pretty much the same gameplay, preorder it.
